Psychotherapy is a type of treatment that can help individuals experiencing an array of mental health issues and emotional struggles. Psychotherapy can help not only alleviate symptoms but also identify the psychological root causes of one’s condition so a person can function better and have enhanced emotional well-being and healing.

Sessions are typically held weekly or bi-weekly for 50 minutes. Psychotherapy can be short-term (a few weeks to months), dealing with more immediate challenges, or long-term (months to years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and duration and frequency of treatment are discussed with the client and the therapist together.

Both client and therapist need to be actively involved in psychotherapy. The trust and relationship between a person and their therapist is important for working together effectively and making gains from psychotherapy.

Sophia’s approach to therapy is a holistic one, catering to the needs of each client as everyone is different. She provides counselling to individuals, couples and families with an emphasis on a Family Systems approach. However, the interventions she uses can vary as she meets the clients’ needs, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Theory and Psychodynamic Therapy. The therapeutic environment is a safe space where confidentiality meets acceptance, understanding and support to each person’s concerns.

Some of the issues Sophia focuses on are relationship struggles, depression, anxiety, communication skills, pre and post-marital conflict, adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intimacy issues and any day-to-day life concerns. Once you attend your first counselling session, together, you will explore your reasons for taking the step to come and you will work together to create a treatment plan that will suit your needs. Sophia will discuss with you about what works best for you and how to continue your upcoming sessions. Every step you will take you will take it together. As a participant in your journey Sophia can provide you with the tools to manage your concerns in alternate ways, should you be willing and open to explore them. She will provide utmost care to what it is you need to explore and accomplish.

Sophia obtained her Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in New York State. Her previous experience includes providing therapy in a private practice clinic to individuals, couples and families, counselling individuals in a rehabilitation center, and providing counselling in a child and family counselling preventive program.
